Can you leave France and get back in?

A renewal récépissé does bring you back. What strands people is the check-in desk, where the document does not exist in the system the agent reads.

Not yours? The search covers 18 situations.

What the document is and what it allows

A foreigner admitted to file a first application or a renewal is handed a récépissé, which authorises their presence in France for the duration it states. Its validity cannot be under one month and it can be renewed.1

For a renewal or a duplicate, Service-Public says the récépissé is valid for three months, starting the day after your card ends, and can be renewed. A renewal récépissé for a card that allows work also allows you to work.1, 2

An application made on the online ANEF service works differently. The attestation you receive at filing does not prove the regularity of your stay. When the examination runs beyond the date of the document you hold, the prefect must make an attestation de prolongation d'instruction available online, valid up to three months and renewed for as long as the prefect has not decided. With the expired document it proves your stay is regular for the period it states.1, 2

Leaving France and coming back

The Hérault prefecture says that a first-application récépissé and a duplicate récépissé do not allow you to return to France, while a renewal récépissé and a modification récépissé do, provided you carry it with your former residence document, a VLS-TS or a residence card.3

If you must leave without a residence document, the same page says you will need to ask the French consulate for a return visa to come back. This is one prefecture's published answer, not a national rule: the national texts above say what the documents authorise, and your own prefecture is the place to confirm travel.3
