Which French official portals speak English
We opened twenty-four portals that an American uses in the first year in France and read each one. For every portal the table says whether an English version exists, whether the procedure is in English, which languages it offers and what support it states in English.
Pages read on 28 October 2026.
The count
Portals read that have a full English version
Three of them are services of the same portal, ANEF. Counted by site that is 4 of 19.
Portals whose procedure pages we read were in English
1 more was in English in part and 7 were not. The rest have no procedure page we read.
Portal that says in words that support is available in English
ameli.fr. A contact on an English page is listed in the table but is not counted.
The count depends on how a portal is classified. The rules are in the method and every page behind a row is in the table.
Portal by portal
Open a row to see the pages read for it: the address, the route that read it and the counts the verdict comes from.

Rows for ANEF are three services of one portal and share the same English entry. "Procedure in English" reads the information page, the account sign-in or the form entry of the procedure that we opened. It says nothing about the screens behind a sign-in, which we did not open.
Where an English address answers in another language
4 pages we reached through an English entry point were not in English. They are listed with their counts.
- service-public.gouv.fr: www.service-public.gouv.fr/?lang=en declares "en" and its text holds 2 English and 79 French function words, a verdict of French. The page declares English and its text is French.
- ANTS / France Titres: permisdeconduire.ants.gouv.fr/?lang=en declares "fr" and its text holds 0 English and 83 French function words, a verdict of French. The link "Driving licence" on the English home page, address ending in ?lang=en. At the first load it opened the French home page of the driving licence site.
- France Éducation international (TCF): www.france-education-international.fr/en declares "en" and its text holds 39 English and 57 French function words, a verdict of mixed.
- France Éducation international (TCF): www.france-education-international.fr/en/node/307 declares "en" and its text holds 1 English and 164 French function words, a verdict of French. An address under /en whose text is French.
Portals with no English entry point
Eleven portals offered no English entry point on the pages we read: impots.gouv.fr: the tax treaties page, CAF, URSSAF, La Poste Identité Numérique, FranceConnect, Préfecture de police de Paris, Préfecture des Bouches-du-Rhône, Préfecture du Rhône, Préfecture des Alpes-Maritimes, Civic training and exam preparation (Ministry of the Interior), France Travail. For each we looked for a language control, a hreflang address, a link named English and the addresses /en and ?lang=en. A portal can still publish English pages that its own menus do not link to. We found none.
What support is stated
We counted support as stated in English only when a sentence on a page we read says so in words.
- ameli.fr: "Our English speaking operators will answer you as soon as possible, if" and "If necessary, you may be referred over to an English-speaking.helpline."
- France-Visas lists a contact on an English page without saying that it answers in English: "Helpline: +1 305 602 5861 (from 8:30 AM Atlantic time until 3:30 PM Pacific time)" and "The visas office of the consulate general in Washington D.C. also answers requests by email : visas.washington-fslt@diplomatie.gouv.fr"
For the other portals we read no sentence about support in English. That is not a statement that none exists: it is what the pages we read say.
What we could not read
- TLScontact (United States): The page answers with a security check ("Just a moment", Cloudflare). A plain fetch got HTTP 403, a browser window stayed on the check and so did a second, regular browser (Brave).
- OFII: The home page answers with a maintenance page, in French and English ("Service en maintenance", "Maintenance service"): HTTP 503 by fetch and the same page in a browser window and in a second, regular browser (Brave).
These two count in the 24 and in no other total.
How each portal was read
For each portal we picked the page where an American starts (the home page), the English entry point when we found one, one page of the procedure, the sign-in page of its account when there is one, and a support page. 64 pages in all, on 28 October 2026. Each was read by one of three routes, in this order: a plain fetch of the page, a browser window when the page needs scripts or refuses robots, and a second, regular browser (Brave) when the first two fail. The route is on every page of the table.
What is measured on a page
- Declared language. The language in the page's
html langattribute. - Text. The main text of the page when it has one of at least 50 words, otherwise the whole page. A main text keeps the menus and footers in French from lowering the count of an English page.
- Counts. The number of English function words (the, and, of, to, you, your, for, with, is, are, this, that, can, will) and of French function words (le, la, les, de, des, du, et, vous, votre, pour, est, sont, avec, une, dans, que, pas) in that text. The share is English over the two together.
- Verdict. English when the share is 0.60 or more, French under 0.30, mixed between, and no verdict under 10 such words. These cut-offs are ours. The counts are published so that anyone can try another.
Names and titles in French (a program called "Etudes en France") add French words to an English page. The counts for the browser pane readings come from the visible text of the page or the text of the element, which differ by a few words.
How a portal is classified
- English version. None when no English entry point was found. Partial when one exists but covers a section or some sheets only, or when a page read through it is not English. Full when it covers the site and every page read through it is English.
- Procedure in English. Yes when every procedure page and account sign-in we read is English, partial when some are, no when none is.
- English support stated. Yes when a sentence on a page read says that support is available in English.
The same measure can be pasted in a browser console on any page:
(()=>{const m=document.querySelector('main,[role=main]'),t0=(m&&m.textContent.split(/\s+/).length>=50?m:document.body).textContent,n=r=>(t0.match(r)||[]).length;return {htmlLang:document.documentElement.lang,scope:m&&m.textContent.split(/\s+/).length>=50?'main':'page',words:t0.split(/\s+/).length,en:n(/\b(the|and|of|to|you|your|for|with|is|are|this|that|can|will)\b/gi),fr:n(/\b(le|la|les|de|des|du|et|vous|votre|pour|est|sont|avec|une|dans|que|pas)\b/gi)}})() Nothing on this page is an opinion. Each cell is a page, a count or a quotation. How we check facts in general is on how we verify. Journalists will find the contact and the other figures on the press page. Our guide to the first month in France goes through the steps these portals serve.
What each number on the other data pages means: the definitions of every measure, from the publishers' own metadata.
How to cite this table
The table is ours: it is a reading of public pages and carries no figure copied from another publisher. Cite it with the day the pages were read:
EasyFranceNow, "Which French official portals speak English: read one by one", https://easyfrancenow.com/data/french-portals-in-english, pages read 28 October 2026.
Download the table as a CSV. One row per page read, with the portal's classification, the route, the declared language, the counts and the verdict. Portals change their sites. The day in the citation is the only day this table is true for.
